Keeping Your Front Door And Your Mobile Home Secure
Your mobile home screen door and exterior door should keep your home secure when you lock up at night. Thankfully, there are a few great ways to do that:
Change your locks. If youve just moved into a mobile home, or just want to feel more secure, then changing your mobile home door locks is a good way to go. This is generally an easy project to DIY , and many door knobs come with detailed instructions on changing them out. If you rent your home or live in a land-lease community, check with your management before changing your locks to make sure you have permission.
Strengthen your screws, if possible. If you take out the screws on your doorframe or trim plate, you may notice that theyre usually an inch or less in length.
Many contractors will recommend you use longer screws, typically around two inches, to reinforce the doors hardware in case of sudden impact.
If you live in a community, check to make sure youre allowed to change out the hardware.
Install a smart doorbell. Okay, so this isnt technically a tip for your door, but rather your front facade. Installing a smart doorbell has many security benefits for your mobile home.
For one, youll often have a live feed of your front porch on demand at any time. This is great if you need to know when a package was delivered, whos ringing your doorbell so early in the morning, or if youre worried about a potential intruder.

Mobile Home Exterior Doors Custom Size Replacement From A Standard Door
Most exterior doors on mobile homes are not of standard size. If your door is in need of replacement, you can expect to pay 3-4 times the cost of a standard door to purchase a replacement of less than desirable quality. To get a better quality door at a normal price, you have two options cut the door opening bigger to accept a standard size door, or cut-down a door to fit the opening. If you have the headroom, cutting the opening bigger is the preferred way. If not, then maybe cutting down a door is an option you wish to consider.

How To Measure The Mobile Home Exterior Door
For an accurate fit, you will have to manually measure the door with care. While standing on the inside with the door closed, remove the door casing. Then measure the outside to outside measurement of the wood jamb for the width. For the length, measure from the outside of the wooden jamb to the ground.
You will have to pick a door size closest to the measurements you take. The rough opening should be the same measurement as the door size found on markets. The rough opening can be measured accurately if you take the door off.

Cutting Down A Standard Size Door For Your Mobile Home
1) Purchase a pre-hung door of the proper width and remove it from the frame by pulling the pins.
2) Lay the frame on some sawhorses and remove the bottom threshold.
3) Measure the height of the doorway opening. Then cut each side of the frame to that measurement minus 1-2. For instance, if you door opening is 76 inches, you would measure and cut the frame to 75-1/2 inches. Then set the frame into the door opening.
4) With the frame in the door opening, measure the distance from top to bottom. Subtract one inch from this distance and thats the height of your door. Lay your door on the sawhorses being careful to protect the finish. Measure down from the top and mark your cut. Be sure you are cutting the bottom of the door. Again, if the opening measures 74-3/4 inches, then cut your door to 73-3/4 inches.
5) Draw a line straight across and cut using a circular saw. Lay down a piece of food wrap to help protect the saw from scratching the finish. If you have a hollow door, take the solid piece you cut off the bottom and insert it back into the end you just cut. Nail it in place. Dont worry, you wont see the nails.
6) Measure and cut the bottom door seal to fit.
7) Remove any sharp burrs and slide the seal over the bottom. The seal not only nicely finishes off the bottom of the cut door, but also seals the gap between the door and threshold. If you cant find this particular seal at your home improvement store, we have them available for $12 plus shipping. Just e-mail us.

Paint Your Exterior Door To Add Value To Your Home
Its often said that you shouldnt judge a book by its cover. However, in the case of mobile homes, the front door can actually leave an impression on the rest of the homes value.
In fact, the color of your mobile home front door can have a direct impact on the value of the home.
A recent analysis from Homes and Gardens showed that the best color for a front door to add value is black. However, if black isnt your thing, brighter tones that match the facade of your home can add to its value, too.
