Surrounded by forest service land, Sedona offers many great locations for free dispersed camping. Bear in mind that camping is only allowed in permitted areas, and no overnight camping is allowed in the Red Rocks area.
As always, when you are boondocking, you will want to scout ahead and check out the road before heading down it with your rig. Conditions can change, and some roads may not be suitable for larger rigs.
For great free camping near Sedona, check out Loy Butte Road. The road is rough, but the views are excellent. It is also located close to the Native American ruins at Palatki.
One of the best free camping areas near Sedona is off forest road 525 in the Coconino National Forest. This area is very popular with RVers, so you may have to drive down the road several miles before finding an open campsite. There are a lot of spaces along the road, so unless it is a weekend or holiday, you will most likely be able to find a space to call your own. The road is rough, so go slow. Larger rigs can make it down the road, but it is wise to walk the road before you attempt to drive your RV down it.

What To Expect When Camping In Sedona
Camping in Sedona is a dreamy weekend vacation idea. But you’ll find that it’s not very easy to camp here, especially during the warmer months – and especially during Covid-19 when everyone else has the same idea.
Most of the official campsites are situated along Highway 89A, north of Sedona on the way towards Flagstaff. Oak Creek runs down this corridor and inarguably offers the coolest temperatures to camp in during the hot, summer months. The creek is great to go swimming and fishing in, and the oak trees and surrounding flora is lush offering shade and refuge from the heat. These campgrounds are well-managed with toilets, water, picnic tables, and fire rings. However, they are shaded by trees and canyon walls and prohibit the expansive, iconic, red rock views of Sedona. If you choose to stay at an official campsite, try to reserve it as soon as possible as they are popular and well-worth experiencing.
There are eight designated dispersed camping areas. These areas are comprised of nearly 36 acres that accommodate about 10-35 campsites in each area, totaling 150-200 campsitesdepending on the size of the vehicle, trailer, or RV.
The designated areas are accessed via state Route 89A, with five of those areas located along the popular access Forest Road 525, while two others are located along FR 89B, and the final area on FR 9570A. Each site operates on a first-come, first-served basis.
