Salem Rv Dealer Shut Down After Customer Complaints
Salem-based dealership Northwest R.V. Sales Inc. has shut down after an Oregon Department of Transportation investigation into customer complaints.
A release from ODOT said the company, at 6492 Portland Road NE, agreed to pay an $8,000 fine and give up its dealer certificate for three years.
Without a license, the business is effectively shut down, said Oregon DMV spokesman David House. The current owners can still sell their remaining inventory to another dealer, House said.
Customers had complained that Northwest R.V. was slow to pay owners of consigned vehicles and submit title and registration documents to the state, according to ODOT.
State law requires R.V. dealerships to pay owners of consignment vehicles within 10 days of a sale. Title and registration documents must be submitted to the Oregon DMV within 30 days.
The dealership has faced penalties for violating these laws before, House said. In 2012 it was fined for violations and in 2014 had its dealer license placed on a 1-year probation, according to ODOT. The terms of probation were violated in August 2015, and the dealership’s license was suspended by DMV for a week.
Multiple new violations were recorded between February and August 2016, leading the DMV Business Regulation and Fraud Prevention Section to act.
When reached by phone Tuesday, a woman at Northwest R.V. said the business is changing ownership.

SALEM, Ore. — Northwest RV Sales Inc. has made a move similar to filing for bankruptcy, raising questions about how much of a loss its estranged consignment customers will be asked to shoulder.
SALEM, Ore. — Northwest RV Sales Inc. has made a move similar to filing for bankruptcy, raising questions about how much of a loss its estranged consignment customers will be asked to shoulder.
The move follows a state revocation of the Salem company’s dealership certificate in early October after customers had complained it didn’t pay for consigned goods on time.
Public records, documents and interviews show Northwest RV has a history of disregarding rules and leaving customers unsatisfied. More than that, it’s unclear what kind of recourse customers have when consignment companies like Northwest RV dont fulfill their end of a deal.
Ryan Johnson, son of company president Russell Johnson, defended his father in an interview outside of the business on Monday. Russell’s health has been deteriorating for the last year and a half, he said, and the president wasn’t able to be at Northwest RV often. “My dad would never allow this to happen” were he in better health, said the younger Johnson.
He said: “My dad’s an honest Christian man.”
Micheal and Loretta Tryon, two retired state workers in Salem, had taken their 2010 Keystone Cougar a 33-footer with a bedroom and living room down to Yuma, Arizona. “We were snowbirds with it,” said Loretta.
