Your Network Isnt Protected

T-Mobile needs to address these poor signal problems.

If you have a large bandwidth package and are still experiencing slow internet that you suspect is due to a congested network, be aware that people can be poaching your Wi-Fi if the network is unprotected.

There are two main instances that this can happen: First, if youre using a network that you can control and you live in close proximity to others, you may be susceptible. If you can control your network, be sure to establish a strong password that will stop people from trying to hijack your internet.

On the other hand, if youre using a network you cant control, like in a coffee shop, you may just have to accept that the public Wi-Fi network isnt up to the task. In this case, you may have better luck by setting up a hotspot through your mobile carrier.

Run A Speed Test On Your Internet

The first thing to do is to check your internet speed to determine what bandwidth your device is receiving.

You can do so by simply typing in internet Speed Test on Google and using the search engines in-built speed test to determine your connection.

If the speeds are lower than what you are expecting to see, then there are a few steps you can follow to rectify this.

Your Internet Provider Is Slowing Your Internet

Unfortunately, its not entirely uncommon for internet service providers to slow down your internet without your knowledge. In a practice known as internet throttling, bandwidth throttling or data throttling, your ISP may slow your internet to control network congestion or if you are nearing your data allowance cap.

If you suspect you are experiencing this due to network congestionlike if your movie keeps buffering at a time of day when a lot of other people are using the internetthen you may want to look into ISPs that dont throttle. Although the practice is technically legal, it can be frustrating and some ISPs do not do it.

If you have a data cap and experience slow internet as youre nearing your limit, you might want to look into packages with bigger caps that suit your needs.

Why My Love Affair With T

My T-Mobile Home Internet happiness came crashing down roughly two weeks after activating the service. The workday started normally. I had just finished my morning meeting for work, I had Sling TV on in the background on the Roku TV in my office, and I was writing a follow-up to my original T-Mobile internet story . Then, the Roku TV suddenly complained that it had lost its internet connection. Shortly after, my Mac indicated no internet connectivity when I went to refresh a webpage.

I got up, walked over to the T-Mobile 5G Gateway, and saw it was reporting No connection. Every 30 seconds, it would show one signal bar, then cycle back to the No Connection error. I chalked it up as a fluke and power cycled the 5G Gateway. It booted back up and displayed the same status message about a lack of connectivity. At this point, I was pretty annoyed, so I started tinkering with the tall, cylindrical device.

I swiped across the circular touch screen and came across the Alerts page, which showed that I had a critical error message: All PDN IP Connection Failure. Because I needed internet to work, I turned on the Personal Hotspot on my iPhone and wirelessly tethered it to my Mac. Next, I typed the error message into Google and found several threads on the official T-Mobile Community Forums, Reddit, and other sites. Its a problem that many people have encountered and one that T-Mobile seems reluctant to fix.

Apparently Im Not Alone With The All Pdn Ip Connection Failure

Why hasnt anyone from T-Mobile replied? Im having the same issue and havent found any reliable fixes from internet searches. – Tannerqmartin

Not surprisingly, other users say that they encountered much of the same commentary from T-Mobile customer service. Many never had service restored, even after having a replacement 5G Gateway sent to their homes. Heres asample of the responses from theT-Mobile forums andReddit:

I am having this All PDN IP Connection Failure error code as well. I have called T-Mobiles support for 5 days in a row and no one can tell me what it means. eshoemake

I started TMHI service a couple weeks ago. Im 0.6 miles from a T-Mo tower. The signal has been strong. 5G, 3 bars, decent Mbps. Lost connection 2/18/22. T-Mo tech said it was a tower issue. coyote

I got T-Mobile home internet just over 2 weeks ago. Had blazing speeds, everything was working flawlessly. Then a week ago I lost all connection and kept getting the PDN IP Connection Failure on my Nokia trashcan. Multiple calls/hours on the phone, multiple factory resets, etc, didnt fix the issue. Ive been sent 3 different Nokia trashcans in the past 6 days since Tech Support didnt know the cause. All 3 do the same thing. I have not had internet for over a week now. Satcaster

You Have Too Much Going On

Even with a capable router and a strong Wi-Fi connection, your internet may slow down if the network is overloaded with devices demanding attention. For example, if youre trying to download files on your computer while someone else in the household is watching videos on their phone and someone else is streaming a show on the television, everyone might experience lagging internet. If possible, you can mitigate this issue by limiting the simultaneous demands on your Wi-Fi networklike saving your downloading for later. But, if its a persistent issue, you might want to look into upgrading your internet package to include more bandwidth.

Try To Connect To Another Tower

If the fix above didnt help, then you might need to connect to a different cell tower.

Since most phones are set to Auto for this setting, the mobile device connects to the closest tower it can access, but sometimes the closest tower may not be the best.

To connect to a different cell tower:

  • Open Settings on your phone and go to Network and Internet.
  • If you have a dual SIM phone, tap on the SIM card you want to change the tower for.
  • From there, turn off Automatically select network.

This will open a screen where you will see a list of towers you can connect to. Try out each tower to determine which provides the best connection speed.

Please note: It will take a minute or two for the device to refresh the list of available towers.

Interested In 5g Home Internet

5G internet has some key differences compared to cable internet. Check out our 5G Home Internet Guide to learn more about the newest internet technology.

But at the same time, youll be paying far more for Cox and Spectrums faster speeds. For example, Spectrums 300 Mbps plan costs the same as T-Mobiles 5G plan, but after one year, Spectrum ends its first-year discount, and your bill will go up to $74.99 per month. By comparison, T-Mobiles biggest advantage over cable ISPs is its flat-rate pricing.

Youll pay the same price every year on T-Mobile, and if your address gets fast speeds, T-Mobiles value gets even better. If your home gets around 150 Mbps for $30 monthly on T-Mobile, thats a far better deal than paying $70.00 for similar speeds on providers like Spectrum or Cox.

Check If Youve Crossed Your Data Cap

Since most network providers give the user a predetermined amount of data, either on a daily or monthly basis, check if youve exhausted this.

If your plan includes a daily data cap, your network speed should be restored post 00:00 a.m, but if you use a monthly plan and have exhausted your data, then you might have to look at purchasing additional data plans.

If you are running out of data on a regular basis and you rely on mobile data, its a good idea to invest in a plan that provides more daily or monthly data.

The Best External Antennas For The T

Using a MIMO antenna outside your building, pointed at the nearest tower, can help you get the fastest 4G LTE and 5G data rates possible.

The T-Mobile 5G Internet Gateway has four internal U.FL ports, which allow for two 2×2 MIMO antennas or a 4×4 MIMO antenna to be connected to the device.

Since a 4×4 MIMO antenna offers superior performance and would allow more of the internal cellular antenna ports to be used that a 2×2 MIMO antenna, we highly recommend our 4×4 MIMO antenna kits over our 2×2 MIMO antenna kits.

Accessing the antenna ports does require some disassembly. And we recommend being careful: if you damage the device and then later return it, T-Mobile can charge you a damage fee. Our instructions below guide you through how to connect and test antennas without damaging the device.

We recommend two different 4×4 MIMO antenna options for use with the T-Mobile 5G Internet Gateway:

However, if you have line of sight to the nearest tower, we recommend using a 4×4 MIMO Log Periodic Antenna kit instead. The higher gain on these antennas can also get you better performance, but only when you have a straight shot to the tower.

Why External Antennas Are Critical For Improving Data Rates

There’s one big misconception about external antennas.

Most people think that external antennas primarily help you increase your data rates by increasing the signal strength.

    But that’s not the case.

An increase in signal strength is actually probably the third most important way that external antennas help.

Here are the three main ways that external antennas help you increase your data rates:

    1.They Improve Signal Quality

In 4G LTE and 5G networks, signal quality is measured as SINR or sometimes as RSRQ .

Improving signal quality has a huge impact on your data rates.

Higher data rates allow your hotspot to communicate using “higher order modulation schemes.” That means they can use the same wireless spectrum to send more data per second.

    However, there’s one big caveat:

In order to improve your signal quality, you need to both aim and shield your outdoor antenna properly. We talk more about this in the next section.

2.They Allow You To Connect On More Bands

Hotspots like the T-Mobile 5G Internet Gateway support a feature called “carrier aggregation.”

Carrier aggregation allows the Gateway to connect on multiple cellular bands simultaneously.

The more bands you’re connected on, the greater the bandwidth, and the higher your data rates.

However, many of the higher frequency bands aren’t able to penetrate into buildings. Using external antennas allows you to access higher frequency bands, which are often less congested and offer higher speeds than lower frequency bands.

Signal Issues With 5g Gateway Home Internet

We have been using T-Mobile home internet for a while now using the original 4G LTE Gateway home internet device which worked just fine. This week we were at a T-Mobile store and upgraded to the new 5G Gateway which we were told was amazing and much faster. As soon as we hooked it up the signal strength was weak. Internet service was slow at best and streaming anything online was impossible because the signal kept dropping. I contacted customer service and spent over a hour on line trying to troubleshoot the device . The technician finally decided to send us a replacement device. Instead of receiving a replacement 5G Gateway they sent me a refurbished Galaxy cell phone which is a whole other story, but it was back on the phone with customer service. The second service technician said they would have engineering check our device which would take a few days to complete and they would contact me with the results. Three days later I received a call explaining my device was working perfectly but the cell tower we were receiving a signal from was overloaded and was scheduled to be upgraded by August 9th and until then our signal would not likely improve. The thing that makes no sense is the older device worked fine receiving the signal from the same tower. The new device is supposed to work with either 4 LTE or 5G but is terrible. Has anyone else had a similar experience with the new 5G gateway device?

Power Cycle Your Home Internet Gateway

A reboot can only do so much to clear your device of corrupted files in its memory.

However, it may not be able to flush out everything. One way to ensure that all temporary files are cleared is by performing a power cycle.

Heres how to power cycle your T-Mobile Gateway:

  • Turn off your Gateway by pressing the power button.
  • Unplug it from the power outlet.
  • Wait for about 2 to 5 minutes to totally discharge it.
  • Plug it back in and switch it on.
  • Tip: In case youre using other network devices such as a mesh WiFi system and extenders, now is the time to do a power cycle on all of them.
